10 Effective Home Remedies to Remove Tan Naturally

Our skin is the largest organ in the body. It acts as a barrier and protects us from germs and the outside environment. Without this barrier, we would perish due to multiple infections and exposures. Protecting this vital organ is imperative at all times.

One of the common skin problems that people face is skin tan and sunburn. It's difficult not to get tanned in a tropical country, where the sun shines almost every day. Although moderate UV exposure might help the body produce more vitamin D, excessive exposure can lead to sunburn and tanning. People with sensitive skin are more likely to suntan. Following these incredible home treatments can help you get rid of that suntan and restore your lovely skin.

Home Remedies to Remove Suntan

Here we look at quick and easy home remedies to get you (and your tanned skin) off to a smoother life.

Turmeric & yogurt

Yogurt contains natural acids and enzymes that exfoliate your skin. And the natural bleaching properties of yogurt reduce pigmentation. On the other hand, turmeric is an excellent skin brightening ingredient, and its medicinal properties can help heal sun damage.

How to apply

  1. Mix a bowl of yogurt with a pinch of turmeric to make a thick paste.
  2. Wash it off after 20 minutes.
  3. Repeat this process every day for about 15 days for the tan removing effect

Oatmeal & buttermilk

A notable characteristic of oatmeal is its exfoliating and skin cleansing properties. As buttermilk contains lactic acid, it softens the skin and improves skin tone. Combined, they make a powerful tan removal solution.

How to apply

  1. Take two teaspoons of oats or oatmeal and soak them in a cup of water for five minutes.
  2. Prepare a paste by adding 2-3 teaspoons of fresh, plain buttermilk to the soaked oatmeal and mix well.
  3. Use it on your face and other affected areas.
  4. Gently massage it and let it stay for about 20 minutes
  5. Rinse with water to reveal fresh, glowing skin.

Potato juice is known for its ability to remove dark circles under the eyes - but it can also be used as a lone agent to lighten a suntan due to its bleaching effect.

How to apply

  1. Blend 2-3 potatoes together and put the paste directly on your tanned areas.
  2. Alternatively, you can cut a potato in half and apply it to the affected area.
  3. Let it dry for 10-15 minutes before you wash it off with water.

Lemon juice & honey

The bleaching properties of lemon juice assist in removing skin tans quickly. Meanwhile, honey is an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent. The antioxidants in honey help heal sun-damaged skin.

How to apply

  1. Add some honey to fresh lemon juice and apply it to your skin.
  2. Leave it on for 30 minutes, then wash off.
  3. In addition to lemon juice, you can place some sugar in it and gently scrub your skin to remove dead skin cells.

Please Note:

Since lemon is very acidic in nature, we don't recommend applying it on its own, especially before stepping out in the sun. Always use a carrier like honey for tan removal.
